7 Ways I Use Peppermint Essential Oil During a Migraine

I had a two day migraine this week. Needless to say, I had my Zen Nectar close at all times - but I also had my peppermint essential oil right next to it. 

I love peppermint. It is my go-to tea flavor, bath soap scent, and essential oil during a migraine. The cooling sensation and calming scent make it a migrainuer's friend. 

Now that I'm on the other side of my migraine, I thought I might share some of the ways I use peppermint to help battle the pain.

(Mix the Peppermint EO with a carrier oil, like sweet almond or coconut oil, when applying directly on the skin to prevent irritation.)

  1. Apply directly on areas of pain, making sure not to get too close to your eyes! I end up giving myself a face massage most of the time because I like it all over my face.
  2. Inhale it! Put some peppermint on your palms, rub them together for about 30 seconds, then very lightly cover your eyes with your hands and breathe deeply. Lean forward resting your elbows on your tummy, and your head on your palms - relax and continue to inhale.     
  3. Give yourself a peppermint scalp massage! I like to mix a little essential oil with my conditioner and do the scalp massage in the bath or shower. 
  4. Sprinkle it on the walls of your shower. This is another way of inhaling it, but the peppermint oil feels and smells soothing as the steam opens up your lungs and sinuses. 
  5. Sprinkle on an eye pillow or eye mask (on the OPPOSITE side, NOT the side you put on your face). I like to use it during some restorative yoga.
  6. Give yourself a peppermint neck and shoulder massage, or have someone else give you one!
  7. Rub it on your chest and tummy to combat nausea. You'll not only benefit from the scent, but the cooling sensation is calming for the stomach.
